Widnes Vine Yard - 2000+ Modern Image
Widnes Vine Yard (note not Vin yard) was started back in 1998 by Mike Turner and Dave Skipsey with some help from Gerry Byrne, it was originally conceived as a stop gap until we could decide on something more ambitious and was a reasonably accurate model of the area surrounding Widnes No.1 signal cabin as it existed in about 1977 although the trains were from various eras.
After moving the layout to the Merseyside clubrooms we made a decision to double the track and extend the fi ddle yard and bring the layout up to date by modelling the current scene. This was work was done mostly by Dave Skipsey, Tim Rogers and Mike Turner with help from Gerry Byrne and Phil Eaton and subsequent work has been carried out by members of WFRM. The fridge mountain was built by John Skipsey, Dave Skipsey's 12 year old (at the time) son, from resin castings taken from Perspex masters. The layout was subsequently moved to a members house due to "operating difficulties"
Widnes is computer controlled with a fully interlocked NX panel controlling traffic movements over both the main layout and the fiddle yard. The bracket signal on Widnes was featured in MRJ 171 and its construction is detailed by clicking on the MRJ image to the right
