Track Cleaning Vehicle

WFRM use a commercial track cleaning vehicle and drag it round behind a Heljan Hymek - the track cleaner has been converted to P4 using A1 components.

Jim Smith-Wright tells of his conversion

Conversion of the CMX clean machine to the “other” 4mm trackgauges is pretty easy. Ok you can’t just swap the wheels but it’s not much more difficult than that. In fact for my purposes getting it to run on P4 track also had a handy side effect which will become apparent later. A quick comparison with the area devoted to the bogies and an A1 model etched brass bogie showed that if I were to use 10.5 mm wheels the bogie would fit and still turn quite happily. There is a boss on the underside of the machine on which the original bogies were mounted and the hole in the new bogie needs to be opened out to fit over this. It can then be secured using the original screws. This actually raises the machine up, a side effect of this being that the Kaydee coupling now lines up with those fitted to coaching stock (provided they are fitted in the same place in relation to the prototype and not to match the Kaydee height gauge. So a normal end coach can be used as a barrier coach (as shown in the picture). I will be using a Bachmann class 25 powered HST power car for ease. This raising in height does mean that the pad no longer touches the track so I cut and drilled a piece of hardboard to the shape shown in the diagram. This was secured with Evo-Stick and the ends slightly rounded. The hardboard does soak up some of the solvent, meaning you need to use more initially but it also seems to stay wet longer too.I don’t know if EM gauge modellers would get away with a straight wheel swap but this way doesn’t take more than about an hour anyway.
