| Overview | The Image shows my connecting plate soldered to the post.
After you have cleaned up all the excess solder you can then test fit it into the hole in the connecting plate that was soldered to the bottom of the head. Obviously the scrap brass piece fitted to the post needs filing to match the rectangle soldered to the head. That's the job for step 2 here. I find that filing the post a tad smaller, say .005" than the rectangle on the head leaves it to show up nicely on the finished model and confirms that there really is two plates here, a la the prototype. Filing the post rectangle so that it is identical to the head rectangle leaves the impression to the viewer when the model is positioned on the layout as if only one thick piece was modelled. Not quite so fine in my opinion. When we finally come to fit these parts together to make them look even more like the prototype we have an option to space both plates apart with a shim if we want to.
