Lesson 1 - Basic Routes (Click on thumbnails to expand)

Ensure you have RailRoad and Co (RR from now on) installed and in the View menu, Select Toolbars and ensure the Element Box is checked

The RR toolbar and buttons.

Next draw a simple plan using the track elements, click on the straight element and add some straights and then add a left hand point as shown, to rotate the point use Ctrl+L or the arrows in the toolbar, add a piece of straight between the points, notice how it is automatically aligned correctly - ending up with this (Fig 1),

Fig 1

Complete the track by adding the extra straights and then add two route buttons (the one on the right of the element box with the upward arrow (Fig 2)

Fig 2

Click on the arrow (to the left of the toolbar) and then double click one of the routes - give the route a name, I always name routes as rXxxxx - eg rUpMainThrough, (Fig 3)

Fig 3

then click on the Route tab and then the Record button, note how the dialog changes to a small one at the top left - click a start point and then click an end point and the track between them should highlight, then click the tick in the dialog and then OK on the route properties dialog

Click on the operation mode button, the icon that looks similar to a cat with a square head, second button from the left, and now if you click - slowly otherwise RR will think you want to change the properties - you should see the route light up (Fig 4)

Fig 4

Homework : Try changing the colour of your route, and add some more, one for the other line and maybe one which uses the crossover

Download a zip file containing the working files for the basic plan.
