| Operating | Fitting a (Lenz Gold) Decoder to a Hornby 56 We the recent acquisition of some new Hornby 56s (Fig 1) we had a need to fit decoders to them, and whilst we were at it we snapped a few photos to show how easy it really is ! Remove the body to remove the body simply unscrew the four (4) fixing screws located underneath each bogie, two (2) per bogie, one (1) each side - fig 2 shows one of the screws, the other 3 are in similar positions, one to the left of this and the others under the other bogie
Identify the blanking plate The blanking plate is located at the opposite end, of the chassis block, to the fans (Figs 3/4/5)
Select your decoder We use Lenz Gold decoders almost exclusively, the 56 is no exception Fig 6 shows the decoder position next to the blanking plate Remove the blanking plate. The blanking plate is removed by pulling it straight out, keep it safe as you never know when you might need it again. Fig 7 shows the blanking plate removed and Fig 8 shows the decoder positioned next to the socket, ready for installation
Inserting the Decoder. The decoder in inserted into the socket, not that the hole labelled pin 1 (see Fig 7), is matched to the orange wire (Fig 9), at this point we test to ensure all has gone well, and if necessary correct any faults. Once all is wellthe decoder can be protected in an insulated sleeve, this is not always required but best to be safe than sorry. Hornby supply a suitable piece so we make use of this, we fold the wires up inside it to keep it all neat and tidy, the sleeve can be trimmed to length if required, we don't tend to bother as long as it fits - and as can be seen in Fig 12 the chip is gently pushed into the gap behind the cab bulkhead and is ready
